We here at the blog are eagerly looking forward to Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj’s discourse this Sunday, April 24. Please do join us, as the great spiritual Master speaks on a subject that touches all of us: “Cure for Adversity.”
Adversity, it seems, is stitched into the very fabric of human existence. Almost every day we see its sudden fist fall somewhere in the world, in epic events like tsunamis, earthquakes, conflicts, and countless others. Closer to home, adversity strikes in the endless stream of challenges we all face in our health, relationships, finances, professions, and so on.
The motivational speaker Les Brown once said that the messenger of misery is right now either at your home, has just left, or is about to arrive. It’s true, isn’t it? This is not a cynical perspective, but an honest recognition of the lot of humankind. All great spiritual traditions express in their own way what Lord Buddha declared in the first of his Four Noble Truths: living and suffering are inseparable.
Of course, adversity can have a silver lining. Arnold Toynbee and other historians have observed that the cycles of history crest on waves of adversity. The force of adversity drives civilizations to transcend themselves and rise into greatness. And there’s no question that in our own lives we often find ourselves better off for having faced what seemed to be an impossible personal challenge.
We don’t know how Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj will address this topic on Sunday. But we’re pretty sure about a couple things: his compassion for the problems of human existence will touch us deeply, and his practical wisdom will offer a blueprint we can use in our day-to-day lives to effect real, positive change. We can also be sure that, as a spiritual Master of the highest order, the cure he offers will be permanent – one rooted in God and our soul’s relationship with that eternal source of strength and peace within us.
